BEESTON BOYS U15s START SEASON BY RETAINING CANNOCK MINIS TITLE

The first tournament of the season was held at Cannock HC on August Bank Holiday Monday. The age qualification was Jan 1st 1981 so it is an opportunity to look at the potential players for this coming season’s u15 team. Unfortunately this year due to unavailability we were unable to enter the girls’ event. Other clubs must have faced the same problems as there were only 4 teams in the boys and 3 teams in the girls’ events.
In the boys tournament initially everyone played each other and then played a final or 3/4th place final.

Beeston started slowly against Bridgnorth and Nick Halliwell had to make a couple of important saves, but as the Beeston team gelled they soon got the measure of their opponents emerging as 3-0 winners with goals from Jon Gatus, Rob Trem and Marcus Hooper at the end of the 15minute game. Ryan Smith nearly got on the score sheet but his Dad disallowed his goal as it hit the target just after the hooter had gone!  In the next match Wolverhampton held out longer but finally succumbed to goals from Marcus Hooper and Felix Evans. In their last group match Beeston easily got the measure of a disappointing Cannock team with goals from Marcus Hooper and Ian Welch and Felix Evans scoring twice.

In the final Beeston played Bridgnorth again but by this time Beeston were a team and the poor Bridgnorth players were 3-0 down before they knew what had happened. The final score was Beeston 5 Bridgnorth 1 with Felix scoring a hat trick and Marcus hitting the target twice. This was an impressive performance from a team who apart from Felix can all play for our U15s this coming season. However perfectionist Rob Trem, Beeston’s captain and sweeper, was not happy that the team had conceded a goal! The whole squad played well and they were : Nick Halliwell, Rob Trem, Felix Evans, Jon Gatus, Ian Welch, Ryan Smith, Liam Adams and Marcus Hooper.
