COLTS

Beeston HC hosted these championships on Sunday January 15th and it was a whole club effort with adults and juniors helping with the running, coaching and umpiring of the tournament.
Several of the older colts were involved in umpiring for the first time having taken their Foundation Umpires Course earlier in the season. Well done to Emily Hancock, Stephen Armitage, Hannah Price and Lucy Stephenson. David Charlish, one of our parents, was also making his umpiring debut having passed his Level 1 course. Thanks also to juniors Richard Padley, John Procter, Robert Trem and Chris Price; Adam Stephenson, another parent, who stood guard at the pitch entrance making sure only the teams had access to the pitch; Anne Linsdell, Pete Langley, Alan Postlethwaite, Andy Smith, Mike Price, Vic Gram Hansen and  Martin Keeling who all helped with the umpiring; to the players who all represented the club in a sporting manner and to their parents who supported all the Beeston teams in the tournament.

U11 Girls: Both teams played well in their group matches. Beeston(VGH) won 3 matches beating Nottingham High School 3-0, Nottingham Highfields HC 1-0 and Newark (Hedgehogs) 2-0 and losing 2 matches 0-1 to Newark (Beavers) and Ranby House School who finished 1st and 2nd in the group and therefore qualifying for semi finals. Beeston(VGH) finished a creditable 3rd .
Meanwhile Beeston(MK) were winning all their group matches by beating St Peters 3-0, Grosvenor 3-0, Newark (Otters) 5-0, Hollygirt 3-0 and Newark (Badgers) 7-0. In the semi finals Beeston(MK) beat Ranby Hse School easily 3-0 with goals from Freya Crocker, Maddy Kelly and Ellie Frost. The final was  a repeat of last years but this time Newark(Beavers) took an early lead! Beeston kept calm and following tirless work by captain Katie Hopkisson in the midfield Maddy Kelly equalised. Towards the end of the match Beeston appeared to be in control but were unable to get any clear shots in. The final score was 1-1 and so to penalties again. Unluckily for the girls at the end of the first barrage of 3 strokes Newark had scored 1 and their goalkeeper had saved all of ours. This is the second year that this team have lost the Championships on penalties and they are very unlucky never to have qualified for the Midlands Championships. We look forward to next year and the  U13s girls championships! The medals were presented by Amy Carter, Nottinghamshire’s Hockey Development Officer.

U13 Girls: This event was a round robin with 7 teams all playing each other. Southwell Brincliffe Utd(SBU) proved to be the strongest team winning all their matches and therefore the tournament. Beeston(MP) played well and were unbeaten in their first 4 matches; beating Ashfield 1-0, Beeston(MK) 2-0 and Newark B 1-0; and drawing with Newark A 0-0 a result earned by a superb Cassie Jordan in the Beeston goal. With 2 matches left Beeston(MP) could have won the tournament but they lost 0-1 to eventual winners SBU and 0-1 to Ranby Hse who were runners up, leaving Beeston(MP) with a creditable 3rd place.

Our second team Beeston(MK) did very well despite losing 5 of their matches. This team was young and inexperienced, most of them will be eligible to play again next year, and will have learned from this tournament.
