BEESTON COLTS BBQ and AWARDS EVENING; SATURDAY JULY 9TH 2005
On a sunny and warm Saturday evening in July over 220 colts and their families gathered at Highfields for the 7th annual BBQ and Awards evening. Our guests included Peter Hannah our patron and his wife Nanci and Margaret Gotheridge who not only collates all the results at the Highfields sixes each summer but is married to Martin Gotheridge the newly elected President of England Hockey. Like several of our colts Martin was unable to join us because he was attending the Junior World Cup in Rotterdam We were also pleased to welcome Lynda Lally the Mayor of Broxtowe who not only presented Martin with a generous donation for our funds but also stayed to present the colts with their awards. On show were all the trophies won by the colts during the 2004/05 season, including the National Boys U15 Cup, and trophies from previous seasons. There was also opportunity to reminisce over the photos and press cuttings that now date back over 10 years!
Gary Dundas a local butcher from Draycott and his team provided a wonderful BBQ with desserts and salads organised by Judith Keeling. Everyone mingled as they enjoyed their meal and there was ample time for the kids run around on the sand based pitch. The raffle and tombola was superbly organised and run by several generations of the Morley family and this year raised over £500, a staggering amount. Remember to start collecting your contributions for next years raffle now!
Soon it was time to settle down for Martin’s Speech, the highlight of the evening? The AGM was held and Lizzie Welch was volunteered to fill the empty place on the committee. Coaches, umpires, sponsors and parents were all thanked during the speech for their various contributions during the year. Martin summarised the main events of the year and along the way presented our more light hearted awards.
Finally the main awards were presented culminating in Team of the Year and Player of the year awards. In almost any other year and in any other club the Boy’s U13s might have expected to win the Team of the year award having lost out on the National title on goal difference only. But Beeston is not any other club and this wasn’t any other year, the winners were our National Champions the Boys U15s captained superbly by John Barr. The player of the year went to one of our younger members 13 year old Robert Trem who captained the U13s played sweeper for the U15s, captained the Midlands U13s and played for the Midlands U14s, played for Notts U14s and U15s and was Beeston Men’s 7th team Player of the Year! The complete list of the award winners can be found under the Awards and Honours section in the website.
