22/04/07 This was National quarter final day in the EH Cup and both Beeston boys’ teams were aiming for a place at the National Finals. The U15s travelled to Leek where they expected a hard competitive match, they were not wrong! Beeston had a Liam Adams goal disallowed after 20 minutes allegedly because the ball had not gone out of the D at the penalty corner. The score was 0-0 at half time and a flurry of yellow cards in the second half saw Beeston reduced to 9 men shortly followed by Leeks reduction to 10! Beeston played with the grit and determination that has seen this new team, only 4 players remain from last season’s cup winners, through to victory in previous rounds. With 5 minutes to go first Ross Whiting and then Marcus Hooper scored and a place at the national finals was secured! Full report
The U18s were drawn at home against Crewe Vagrants and seemed to be in control when John Procter scored. They failed to capitalise on this and let Crewe back in the game, the score at the interval was 1-1. After one of those famous half time talks Beeston emerged a different team and played the fast passing game that the club is known for. Beeston scored 4 goals to make the final score Beeston 5 Crewe Vagrants 1. Full report

Unfortunately for Trent the game this time ended in a draw and they lost the resulting penalty stroke competition. Beeston meanwhile went on to win the 5/6th play off. Several Beeston players were in the Trent team so when they are reunited in the club competitions they will be a formidable team. Several Beeston girls were playing in the Trent girls U13 team and they too lost in the final this time to Lichfield.

The Leopards had 8 full England internationals in their team. Beeston played without Nils Lloyd Penny who was training with Wales U18s and lost Ben Arnold a former England U16 through injury after 10 minutes. The boys played very well and provided slightly hotter opposition than expected for the Leopards. Beeston won the first 25 minute session 2-0 with goals from Matt Seal and Sam Ward; they won the second 25 minute session 1-0 with a goal from Charlie Macildowie and despite conceding an early goal won the third 15 minute session 2-1 when Sam Ward scored twice to complete his hat trick. Beeston always looked in control of this match, Sam Ward opened the scoring in the 4th minute and added a second from a penalty corner 10 minutes later. At the start of the second half Oscar Evans made a bid for the Goal of the Season award when he scored one of the most spectacular goals ever seen at Highfields! He beat 5 Bowdon defenders with some quick footwork and slick stick skills before roofing the ball into the back of the net. Oscar’s celebration was almost as spectacular as his goal! Nils Lloyd Penny converted a short corner 2 minutes later and a place in the National Quarter Finals was assured, the final score was Beeston 4 Bowdon 0. This was a confident performance by a talented Beeston squad against a club with a proven record in national competitions.
The wind and rain did not improve for the U15s game against a gritty Bridgnorth team. Ross Whiting scored for Beeston in the 18th minute before Marcus Hooper put in his bid for Goal of the Season with a deflected goal from a pass made by Ryan Smith. Beeston did not keep their two goal advantage for long and the score at half time was 2-1. Bridgnorth came out strongly at the restart and scored almost immediately, unsettling Beeston for a ten minute period. Captain Robert Trem and experienced midfielders Mark Smallwood and Ian Welch slowly helped the team regain control of the match and a penalty corner conversion by Rob put Beeston back in front. Victory and a National Quarter Final place was sealed by another contender for Goal of the Season when Ross made absolutely sure of scoring into an empty net after brilliant passing by Mark and Marcus left the Bridgnorth goalkeeper stranded. The final score was Beeston 4 Bridgnorth 2.

28/01/07 Beeston Boys U18s travelled back to Sheffield Hallam where last year they came unstuck in “a game of two halves” 1-2! This year they again dominated the first half Capt Will Torr scoring after 10 minutes and Sam Dixon scoring a second 5 minutes later. Beeston failed to score again and had to withstand another Sheffield fight back in the second half. David Jones made sure that this time Sheffield only scored once and so Beeston reversed the previous year’s score line to win 2-1.
Beeston Boys U15s had their first home tie, against Belper. Belper played a very defensive game and it took Beeston 45 minutes to score when Ali Prince hit the target. 03/09/06 Beeston boys’ u18s play Midlands and North East in a pre-season warm up!
The new look Beeson Boys’ U18 squad played in a triangular match against a Midlands U15/17 squad and the North East U17 regional squad on the first Sunday of the season. Although a few players were unavailable Beeston had new signings Ben and Sam Arnold and David Jones on duty. The NE beat the Midlands in the first match in a fairly tight contest.
The second match saw Beeston take on the Midlands. Matt Seal opened the scoring for Beeston after 5minutes and the home side extended their lead playing fast passing hockey to 3-0 with goals from Sam Ward and Charlie Brooke. At the half hour the Midlands finally got the ball past David Jones before Ben Arnold re established Beeston’s 3 goal lead just before half time. After the interval the Midlands scored twice to narrow the gap between the teams but Beeston replied with a second goal from Matt seal and a clean strike from John Procter from a penalty corner. The final score was Beeston 6 Midlands 3.
Beeston then stayed on the pitch and played the North East almost immediately. The North East started strongly and had scored 3 goals within 10minutes as Beeston began to falter. However the Beeston team recovered and gradually got to grips with this full divisional team that had been training through the summer conceding only one more goal before the interval. In the second half manager Martin Keeling continued to switch his team in order to try out various formations etc for the forthcoming season. The final score was Beeston 0 North East 6.
This Beeston squad is extremely strong and is underpinned by several U16s who are double national champions. Selection will be very competitive and the extended squad numbers over two dozen players which will be the envy of most other clubs in the country.
The squad for these matches was: David Jones, Darren Smith and Sam Cathie(GKs), Will Torr (capt), John Procter (Vice Capt), Ben and Sam Arnold, Oscar Evans, Matt Seal, Ollie Willars, Richard Lawrence, Caleb Mierkalns, Sam Ward, Sam Dixon, Charlie Brooke and John Barr.
