BEESTON HOCKEY CLUB
COLTS
County Mini Hockey (7-a-side) Championships
We hosted these championships over 2 weekends in January and a big thank you to all adult members of the club who helped with coaching the teams, umpiring or running the tournament and of course to all the parents who encouraged the youngsters who were playing. Several of the older colts were involved in umpiring and running the event as a young umpires and leaders challenge runs parallel to the progress of the playing teams. Thanks to Jack Sykes Wood, Richard Padley, Jamie Calver, Joseph Robinson, Darren Smith, Charlie Culverwell, Tom Campbell, Raj and Harj Gataora for their help.
U11 Girls: Both teams played very well and neither team concede a goal in the tournament. Beeston (VGH) won 1 and drew 2 matches narrowly missing out on a semi final place. Beeston (MP) won all their group matches finishing top and therefore qualifying for the semis. A 3-0 victory over Newark (B) brought them face to face with Newark (A), who have won this title 7times in the last 8 years, in the final. The girls played very well and both teams had their chances but no one scored. The resulting penalty stroke barrage lasted what seemed like a lifetime before Newark nudged ahead after each team had taken 9 penalties! Five years ago I said to our current boys’ u16s that a team would never get so close to a title without winning it when their u11 final went to 6 penalty strokes per team, I have been proved wrong. Unlucky girls but well played. The girls were presented with their medals by Eileen Hartley the tournament director and a former Beeston Colts Coordinator. Team(MP)=Ellie Frost, Charlie Gram Hansen(3g), Ella Holloway(5g), Imogen Hooper, Katie Hopkisson, Cassie Jordan, Caroline Keane(1g), Isabelle Morledge, Kate Sotheran(2g) and Grace Trem. Team(VGH)=Grace Atkinson, Eleanor Bowness, Hannah Fritsch, Camilla Hobbs, Holly Noon, Lois Packham, Taz Shaw, Rozie Smith, Louise Thompson and Anna Wilding.
U13 Girls: This event was a round robin with 7 teams all playing each other. Newark and Ranby House were the best teams finishing first and second respectively. The Beeston teams played well finishing 4th Beeston (MP) and 5thBeeston (VGH) 1 and 2 points behind 3rd place. Team(MP)=Bex Brown, Jenny Burke(5g), Phillipa Burgin, Sophie Halley(g), Chloe Huckstep, Amy Marriott, Gabby MacSweeney, Grace Morledge, Abi Packham and Emily Slatcher. Team(VGH)=Rachel Armitage, Imogen Bachra, Lauren Cooper, Harriet Dexter, Serena Gataora, Cassie Jordan, Claire Musson, Megan Pithouse, Anna Redgate and Becky Teece.
U11 Boys: We again had two teams in this competition. Beeston (DLB) was a young and mostly inexperienced team, at least 3 of the team are eligible to play in the National U9 Festival at Highfields on May 14th, and they played 4 group matches. Beeston (MK) team won all their group matches and their semi final scoring 10 goals and only conceding 1, against Grosvenor. In the final they met Grosvenor again this time winning 1-0 with a goal scored by Matt Shuttleworth. Beeston therefore retained the title which we have now won 4 times in the last 5 years. Team(MK)=Richard Carlisle, Josh Dixon, Ryan Elliott(1g), Sarbpreet Singh Hundal(1g), Will Jackson, Robert Procter(7g), Matt Shuttleworth(2g), Jack Simkins and Rhys Stevenson. Team(DLB)=Oliver Atkin, Nathan Connelly, Charles Dolan, Rowan Elston, Jordan Homer, Charles Howarth, Ben Nevill, Josh Robinson and Dan Smith. James Powell played for Grosvenor.
U13 Boys: We are very strong at this age group and despite losing ten players to schools were still able to field three teams. Beeston (MP) were in a tough group containing Grosvenor who had won both the county and midlands titles and finished 3rd at the Nationals as U11s and Ashfield who eventually qualified for the semis as best group r/up. Beeston (MP) finished a creditable 3rd in their group. Beeston (DLB) also finished 3rd in their group on equal points with 2nd placed Newark. Beeston (MK) won all their group matches scoring 11 goals and conceding just 1. In the semis they met a strong West Bridgford team who had beaten Newark 7-0 in a group match, 2 goals by Jon Gatus took Beeston into the final and a rematch of the 2003 U11 final. Grosvenor fielded 3 Beeston players Ian Welch, Ross Whiting and Cameron Heeley. Most of the pressure came from Beeston although Grosvenor were dangerous on the counter attack. A majestic performance by Rob Trem made sure that no breakaway goals were scored and the deadlock was finally broken when Marcus Hooper scored the only goal of the match for Beeston. We have now won this title 6 out of the last 7 years! Team(MK)=Liam Adams(1g), Jon Allcock, Nick Charlish(1g), Jon Gatus(6g), Bradley Gram Hansen, Marcus Hooper(3g), Ali Prince(2g), Ryan Smith, Robert Trem(1g), and Charlie Willars. Team(MP)=Chris Albas Martin, Dan Bingley, Josh Doo, Ryan Elliott, Jack Howard, Nick Musson, Dan Naylor, Jack Simpkins and Jack Williams. Team(DLB)=James Baker, Joe Bone, Will Chamberlain, Aran Connelly, Chris Dobbin, Alex Farne, Jamie Newton and Chris Trem. Rory Macildowie, Matthew Smythe and Matt Shuttleworth were selected for the U13s but were ill on the day. The winning teams were presented with their medals and trophy by Beeston’s patron Peter Hannah.

Beeston therefore won 2 championships and were runners up in another equalling last year’s record breaking performance. However our strength in depth particularly in the girls’ events has greatly improved. The boys U11s and U13s will now progress to the Midland Championships on April 17th.

Midlands Regional Tournament
U11 Boys:  In the morning the boys’ u11 team had been in action. In their group matches they beat Northampton Prep (Northants) 1-0, beat Bromsgrove School (Worcs) 2-0 and drew with Fairfield School (Leics) 0-0. Their stats were exactly the same as Fairfield so a penalty stroke competition decided who finished top of the group. Beeston won this 4-3 with a solid performance from Rhys Stevenson in goal who had already saved a penalty in the group match against Fairfield. In the semi final Beeston let in an early goal from a short corner against Lichfield HC (Staffs) and although they had many chances and hit the woodwork several times they failed to equalise and therefore went out of the competition. The title was won by Belper so the boys know that they were capable of winning but their inability to score on the day proved to be their downfall. However they should take heart that this year’s U13s lost narrowly in the county final two years ago as u11s and are now midlands champions. The squad was Rhys Stevenson, Jack Simkins, Ryan Elliott(Capt), Matt Shuttleworth, Jake Trembling, Sarbpreet Singh Hundal, Rob Procter, Will Jackson, Josh Dixon and Josh Robinson. The goals were scored by Jake 2, Rob and Sarbpreet.

U13 Boys: The Midlands Tournament reverted to the original format this year with 2 groups of 4 county champions leading to cross over semi finals and lower placing matches. Beeston U13s started very strongly scoring 4 quick goals against Spratton Hall (Northants) from Ryan Smith, Ali Prince and Jon Gatus. There next match against Bromsgrove School (Worcs) also began well with a goal from Jon Gatus but Bromsgrove struck back with 2 quick goals and went on to score a third as Beeston went on the attack for an equaliser. The third group match against Oakham School (Leics) proved easier with Beeston winning 2-0 and changing their playing formation, Ali Prince coolly converted a penalty stroke and Jon Gatus hit the back of the net yet again! In the semi final Beeston took control against Bridgnorth HC (Shrops) with goals from Jon Gatus and Marcus Hooper enabling us to rest key players before the final, Bridgnorth snatched a consolation goal in the dying seconds of the match.
The Final was a rematch with Bromsgrove who seemed to be already planning where to put the trophy, Beeston had other plans! The adjusted playing formation worked a treat and with old hands Rob Trem and Jon Gatus setting a fine example to the rest of the team Beeston worked tirelessly getting back to defend as soon as possession was lost. Bromsgrove never had a shot on goal and Beeston won 2-0 with a goal from Jon Gatus and another perfectly placed penalty stroke from Ali Prince. This was a strong performance by the whole squad and means that Rob and Jon will be playing in their 4th National Min Hockey Finals, more than any other Beeston player even Adam Dixon! The squad was Jon Allcock, Rob Trem(Capt), Ryan Smith, Nick Charlish, Marcus Hooper, Ali Prince, Jon Gatus, Charlie Willars, Bradley Gram-Hansen and Liam Adams.

National Tournament
U13 Boys:  On Sunday 15th May it was Beeston under 13s turn to try to make it 2 National Titles in 2 days for the club. The National Mini Hockey Championships is a round robin tournament between the 5 regional champions and is a 7 a side game played on a half size pitch. The championships are held at Beeston’s superb facilities at Highfields.
Beeston’s under 13s were captained by Robert Trem who had played the whole of the game for the under 15s the previous day. Beeston champions of the Midlands started with an excellent 2-1 victory against Dean Close School (champions of the West). Unfortunately they then lost 0-3 to Ipswich School (champions of the East) before producing two superb performances by beating Malsis School (champions of the North) 3-1 and Whitgift School (Champions of the South) 3-2. Due to the points system, 3 for a win 2 for a score draw and 1 for a no score draw Beeston finished on 9 points. Ipswich were on 7 points prior to their last game so Beeston required Dean Close to win or hold Ipswich to a no score draw in order for Beeston to take the title. The match ended in a 1-1 draw giving Ipswich School a final tally of 9points so the result between the two teams decided the National title i.e. the only match Beeston lost! However nobody could deny that Ipswich did not deserve the title and the Beeston boys should be proud of their achievement as under 13 National Runners up. Thirteen year old Robert Trem merits a special mention as he won a national winners and runners up medal within 24 hours.

Beeston Under 13s: Jon Allcock, Robert Trem(Capt), Alistair Prince, Ryan Smith, Jon Gatus, Nick Charlish, Marcus Hooper, Charlie Willars, Bradley Gram-Hansen and Liam Adams.
