England Hockey Club Plate 2005/06 Round 2: February 19th
The U15 Girls were first through to the last 16 in this competition when their opponents Kingston upon Hull conceded the match early on the Saturday morning. They had fallen victim to unavailability due to the timing of the fixture at half term. Beeston too were without several players but our strength in depth is remarkable and the girls were disappointed not to play.
The U18 Girls were also without two players Claire Meddins and Jo Stzejer but they were much too strong for Brigg. Becky Morley in the Beeston goal touched the twice such was Beeston’s dominance. Captain Lauren Moor, injured for the Belper match, celebrated her return with a hat trick. The remaining goals were scored by birthday girl Becky Paffard, Tori Broughton and Holly Gillott as Beeston emerged as 6-0 winners. Every member of the squad played a part in the victory. Phil Dearden was kind enough to travel with the girls to Brigg as their umpire. Beeston squad: B.Morley, A. Dickenson, E.Keeling, L.Howarth, K.Taylor, B.Paffard, H.Gillott, L.Moor, K-A.Rose, E.Hancock, C.Watson, J.Taylor, T.Broughton and A.Skoyles. Coach/Manager: M.Keeling.
Both girls’ teams are now through to the last 16 in their respective National Plate competitions.
England Hockey Club Plate 2005/06 R3(Last 16): March 19th
The U15 Girls were drawn away to Bridgnorth in Shropshire. They were a weary bunch as they gathered in the car park early on Sunday morning, several of them planning to catch up on sleep en route to Bridgnorth. However it must have worked as the girls made a strong start dominating the first half. Their first goal, scored by captain Hannah Price, came form a short corner and a further 2 goals were scored by Holly Brown giving Beeston a 3 goal lead at the interval. In the second half Bridgnorth fought back hard and managed to slip in a goal but Beeston reacted well and came back into the game maintaining their two goal advantage. The final score was Bridgnorth 1 Beeston 3. Many thanks to Richard Padley who travelled with the girls to umpire the match. Beeston Squad: Rozi Brennan, Lucy Stephenson, Holly Brown, Jenny Burke, Becca Jordan, Hannah Price, Bex Brown, Charlotte Goodman, Emily Slatcher, Reo Kynoch, Ali Chaplin, Rosie Farish and Lorna Rowley.Manager/Coach: Mike Price. In the National Plate Quarter Final the U15 girls have been drawn away to Alderley Edge on April 2nd.
The U18 Girls took to the pitch straight after the U15 boys and with the news from Bridgnorth that the U15 Girls had won were determined to win. Their opponents were Leek HC, a team that some of the girls had beaten on the way to the U18 National Plate final in 2004 when they were only U16s. They did not have to wait long before Becky Paffard gave them the lead after only 6 minutes. Although the girls had several more chances they did not add to the score before half time. In the second half they turned their superior possession into goals from Kelly Ann Rose, Jo Taylor, Emily Hancock, Claire Meddins and another from Becky Paffard. The final score was Beeston 6 Leek 0. Many thanks to Pete Fenton who umpired the match. Beeston squad: B.Morley, A. Dickenson, E.Keeling, L.Howarth, K.Taylor, B.Paffard, H.Gillott, L.Moor, K-A.Rose, E.Hancock, C.Watson, J.Taylor,C.Meddins and J.Sztejer. Coach/Manager: M.Keeling.
In the National Plate Quarter Final the U18 girls have been drawn at home to Matlock Baileans on April 2nd.
England Hockey Club National Plate Quarter Finals: April 2nd
The official dates for these matches was April 9th the first weekend of the school holidays a ludicrous date chosen by England Hockey who seem to think that club juniors do not attend school! Luckily our opponents readily agreed to a change of date which slightly eased the situation.
The U15 Girls still had to travel, they are thinking of buying a team mini bus, to Alderley Edge with only 11players including 2 girls Gabby MacSweeney and Chavonne Duckworth who were making their debuts for the team. The girls played superbly and dominated the match, with two goals each from Jenny Burke, Holly Brown and Emily Slatcher. The final score was Alderley Edge 2 Beeston 6. Beeston Squad: Holly Brown, Jenny Burke, Becca Jordan, Hannah Price, Rosie Farish, Bex Brown, Charlotte Goodman, Emily Slatcher, Sophie Mulligan, Gabby MacSweeney and Chavonne Duckworth. Manager/Coach: Mike Price.
The U18 Girls were almost at full strength with only Emily Hancock and Amy Skoyles missing but they had to play in hurricane conditions at Highfields in the evening against a strong Matlock team. As they say in football it was a game of two halves. With Matlock leading 2-0 at half time the Beeston girls dug deep in the second half to level the scores with two goals from captain Lauren Moors. Despite numerous short corners the girls were unable to nudge in front and the final score was Beeston 2 Matlock 2. The resulting stroke competition was equally close with Matlock winning in the sudden death stage 7-6! This was a superb match played in a friendly but competitive manner with only the result being a disappointment. Beeston squad: B.Morley, A. Dickenson, E.Keeling, L.Howarth, K.Taylor, B.Paffard, H.Gillott, L.Moors, K-A.Rose, C.Watson, J.Taylor, C.Meddins, J.Sztejer, V.Broughton and N.Johnson. Coach/Manager: M.Keeling.
This was the last age group match for Emma Keeling, Jo Stzejer, Lauren Moors, Claire Meddins, Kelly Anne Rose and Charlotte Watson. Most of these girls have been playing together for club and county since they were 12 years old and they were one of the main reasons that Beeston Ladies were formed. They have been loyal supporters of the club and we wish them well for next season as they head off to university/employment and hope that they continue to play and enjoy their hockey wherever that may be.
In the National Plate Semi Finals on May 7th the U15 girls have been drawn against Old Loughtonians and yes you’ve guessed it is away again!!
England Hockey Club National Plate Semi Final: May 7th
Once we realised that Old Louts had sent us round the North Circular the wrong way things improved! Late withdrawals one the night before the match, too late to call in replacements, meant that the squad were reduced to 12 players so there was slight panic when Rozie was still missing with under half an hour to go. However Rozie made it and the girls started confidently creating a few early chances. When Beeston were awarded their first short corner disaster struck as the move broke down and Old Louts charged down to the other end and promptly scored! The Bees then lost their shape and determination and conceded a second 5 minutes later. At the interval coach Mike Price and manager Martin Keeling encouraged and reorganised the girls who came out with extra determination in the second half. Goals from Holly Brown and Rosie Farish put Beeston back on level terms and the girls played some lovely passing hockey. Old Louts took the lead again in the 57th minute but Holly came to the rescue again with another goal. Beeston continued to dominate the second half and were awarded 15 short corners to Old Louts 5 but were unable to score again.
The final score of Old Loughtonians 3 Beeston 3 led to the lottery that is the penalty stroke barrage. An interesting umpiring decision halfway through the penalties enabled an Old Louts player to retake her penalty 3 times and kept them level. Old Louts eventually nosed ahead 4-3 and Beeston were out of the competition. This was a great effort by the girls who never stopped trying and who showed tremendous courage to come back from 0-2 and 2-3 down. There is no doubt that to be drawn at home at this stage of a national competition is a huge advantage, we travelled 150 miles to the game and a long 150 miles home. The girls have played very well all season and have never played at home since the first round of the cup in November! Let’s hope we get the home draws next year. Beeston Squad: Charlotte Goodman, Hannah Price, Lucy Stephenson, Rozie Brennan, Emily Slatcher, Bex Brown, Holly Brown, Lorna Rowley, Jenny Burke, Allie Chaplin, Rosie Farish and Rheo Kynoch. Coach : Mike Price. Manager:Martin Keeling.
